Installing 3M film in the atrium

3mfilmThis will be a short one. We have finally started the installing the 3M film on the glass in the Atrium ceiling. The inside upper windows are repaired sufficiently that we decided to go ahead and start this part of the project. Oh, i wish I could have done this several months ago before we were consistently getting 95+ degree weather. But... it's happening now and I'm sure we aren't done with the hot weather. I don't think the picture I have is going to give any kind of idea what the difference is like. Not only will it cut down on the glare; it will make such a difference in the temperature of the room too.

The crew will have to finish next Wednesday since it's taking a little longer than they thought. There are unbelievable angles on the windows in the round part of the Atrium. I'll put up this picture for now and then maybe I can take some more when they are done. If you look at the glass to the left and behind the fan, that is with the 3M film. The glass to the right is plain glass. Amazing!

How we name our rooms

hay_balesIt's been a little over a month and we're still not done with the repairs to the Atrium. We're all frustrated because work has to be stopped and the room thoroughly cleaned up any time we have an event or a larger number of guests to serve breakfast to. Slow going. I don't even want to guess how long before we're finished.

And it is HOT and dry around here (Dry, but humid too) I keep counting the dollar signs when we have to air condition that room without the 3M film in the "ceiling" to cut the heat (and glare) factor. We've had temperatures close to 100 degrees over the last 3 weeks. One (of several) reasons I moved from SC was to get away from this kind of weather. College was another.

The Glass Atrium

30198_397268304911_119862319911_4364318_4975410_nThe Glass Atrium is undoubtedly a big “draw” for the Inn. Lots of people ask if I put it on when remodeling for the Inn. Actually, the previous owner had put it in with a swim spa in the circular end of the Atrium. I remember the first time I came to look at the house and thought I had walked into the YMCA. The chlorine odor was very strong. It didn’t take me long to figure out why. When the previous owner was here, she had no air conditioning in the Atrium. So she had to use huge amounts of chemicals to keep “things” from growing in that swim spa. I remember when I was going through the City Hall gauntlet to get all the approvals I needed, there were several who asked if I was going to keep the spa. I think they were kidding. My response was “Maybe in Vail, CO or Europe, strangers might climb into a spa with perfect strangers, but not likely here in the Valley.” Once we started checking into taking it out, we found it was pretty seriously cracked anyway.
