Ox-Eye Vineyard: A Traditional European Vineyard

Ox-Eye Vineyard Tasting Room

“We bring the farm to downtown,” says John Kiers, co-owner of Ox-Eye Vineyard. And they certainly do! Their farm, located about 8 miles from the tasting room, grows 80-90 tons of grapes each year with the grapes processed into wine right on the farm.

Sold in three states, as well as the District of Columbia, Ox-Eye Vineyard has earned a reputation as an excellent estate wine!

Why Ox-Eye Vineyard Grows Such Good Wine

Ox-Eye Vineyard GrapesWhen the Kiers were looking to buy a vineyard farm in the mid-90’s, they knew exactly what they needed to grow extraordinary wine. They found it with a farm that is just 8 miles from Staunton.

The 100-acre farm has a high elevation of 1830 feet and slopes facing east-southeast, perfect for growing Austrian type grapes. The soil, which is a limestone base, provides all of the vital nutrients needed to grow healthy vines and grapes.

What’s more, the deep soil allows the grapevines to thrive without irrigation. The Kiers also credit the constant breezes on the farm as a source of disease control and good air drainage which combats frost.

Finally, because the Shenandoah Valley has a diurnal temperature variation, warm during the day and cool at night, the grapes ripen with some of the highest sugars in Virginia but with no loss of acidity.

The Kiers are proud of the fact that Ox-Eye Vineyard was one of the first vineyards in Augusta County to grow vinifera or Old World wine grapes.

From Selling Grapes To Selling Estate Wine

For the first 10 years the Kiers owned their vineyard, John continued to sell his grapes to other vineyards. Then in 2010, they built their own winery and began bottling the wine from the fruit grown on their farm.

Now Ox-Eye Vineyard sells their estate wine in three states, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and in Washington, D.C. Locally, you can find it at restaurants such as Aioli’s, The Shack, Stonewall Jackson Hotel, and the Pampered Palate Cafe.

Or, you can come into the Ox-Eye tasting room, located in the historic Wharf District, and taste their wine. Maybe take home a bottle or two. Wine tastings are available anytime during business hours, 12 p.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Thursday, 12 p.m.-7 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

When you book your reservation with us HERE, we’ll gladly point you in the direction of the restaurants that offer this fine wine! It’s a wonderful way to enjoy an excellent meal.
