About the Historic Staunton Foundation
You might think the Historic Staunton Foundation is a Non-Profit that’s stuck in the past. No, not stuck, inspired by it! While HSF is dedicated to preserving historic buildings here in Staunton, it is equally dedicated to preserving and revitalizing neighborhoods and communities.
Preserving our local culture and the stories associated with it is certainly part of their mission but so is restoring worn out buildings that ultimately build a sense of community pride!
This worthy organization doesn’t just preserve buildings and communities. The work it does has proven to have a positive impact on the environment and on the re-birth of Staunton’s economy.
When you stay at the Inn at Old Virginia, we’ll direct you to downtown Staunton. (There’s much to see
and do!) But the first thing you’ll want to do is look up! Thanks to the efforts of HSF and
the architects at Frazier & Associates, we have a beautiful eclectic mix of architectural historical styles.
It’s not unusual to see tourists snapping pictures!
And it’s one reason prestigious organizations and companies like the Heifetz Institute, Sunspots, Huss & Dalton, and Ferguson Metal Fabrication located here.
40+ Years of Preservation and Winter Wine Weekend
The Historic Staunton Foundation was born in the 1970’s when a group of concerned citizens rallied together to protect the rich architectural heritage of the city. At that time, Staunton was routinely tearing down historical buildings to make room for more automobile parking.
They then hired University of Virginia architectural historian, Bill Frazier. In 1977, Frazier, the Foundation’s very first executive director focused on education.
He knew that the problem of urban decay for small communities was a lack of economic development. Preservation of Staunton’s old buildings had to be a magnet for business. And it has become!
Over 40 years later, Staunton is still reaping the benefits of Frazier’s foresight.
But to build a community that is known for its dedication to historic preservation and economic development takes money. And that’s where HSF’s Winter Wine Weekend fundraiser comes into play.
This year, it’s scheduled for February 24th, 12 noon- 5 p.m. at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel. Expect to enjoy samples of fine Virginia wines from some of our State’s most celebrated vineyards and wineries.
With live music and door prizes to complete the event, it’s an afternoon of fun that helps keep the Historic Staunton Foundation doing good works that preserve and grow the Shenandoah Valley’s Queen City!
